A Day in Kotor, Montenegro

VIEW ON ARRIVAL

We were rewarded with this wonderful view of Kotor Bay early morning arriving into Kotor. This was 7 am in Kotor bay from our room. When arriving by cruise you would need to set your alarm early to watch the ship glide through the Fjord like mountains. The towering limestone cliffs are unreal. The Kotor Montenegro cruise port is in southern Europe on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in the Bay of Kotor.

The old city of Kotor is a UNESCO world heritage site and fortified. The town is almost medieval and churches and buildings from 12th to 15th century. The main is full of shops and cafes. Pick a street and start exploring. Cat lovers would love Kotor. The town is dedicated to cats and you will find many “Cats of Kotor” souvenirs. We had a lot of fun exploring alleyways and looking through courtyards.

If you are looking for magnificent views head on to the mountain behind the town and head for a hike, 90 minutes up to a fortress. You will need good walking shoes and keep hydrated, the steps are very steep and crumble at many places. We only made it up half way the sun was extremely hot and we did not bring enough water.

We then grabbed a taxi and headed to the quaint village of Perast. Perast lies beneath the hill of St. Ilija and overlooks the Verige strait, the narrowest part of the Bay of Kotor. Near Perast there are two islets and you can see these from the ship, one is called St. George and the other Our lady of the rocks with a picturesque chapel. They are the only artificially-built island in the Adriatic. Legends states that sailors placed a rock each time they returned and finally this Island was erected. This was beautiful spot and we got caught in heavy rain on our way back. But the views were spectacular.
