Macaws were once nearly extinct in Costa Rica. Their lifespan in the wild is from 40 to 50 years, but in captivity Scarlet Macaws can live between 75 and 90 years. Scarlet Macaws feed on seeds, fruits, leaves, flowers and bark of dozens of tree and plant species that grow in Costa Rica’s coastal forests. The macaws also eat Indian food and love almonds that originally come from India. The bird call is a throaty squawk, squeak or scream audible for miles. We stopped at an overlook on our way from Jaco and saw a huge flock squawking away. They soared in the sky in pairs, Scarlet macaws mate for life. They were moving constantly and I got a few shots.
